THE PORTUGUESE HEBREW SYNAGOGUE
Is a traditional Sephardic Rite institution founded by Jews of Spanish and Portuguese origin
from the Iberian Peninsula who returned to the roots of their ancestors, rescuing the real
Jewish identity, which was lost and then found in London.
The rites and prayers are based on the Spanish-Portuguese siddur of the Jews who lived in
the Iberian Peninsula until their expulsion during the Inquisition in 1492 and they were taken to
Amsterdam and London.
The main objective of the synagogue is to be a house of prayer, gathering, and Torah’s
studies, humanitarianly welcoming those who identify as descendants of Jews from Portugal
and Spain when they have come to Brazil.
Besides that, it aims to promote studies, researches, exchanges, and history in the recovery of
Ladino’s rites and songs in the traditions of our ancestors.
To participate in projects, seminars, congresses, academic studies, and promoting exchanges
with other communities spread across the Americas.
Objectives:
1. To rescue the lost Hispanic-Portuguese Sephardic tradition of the Iberian Peninsula, which began on March 31, 1492, with the expulsion of 200,000 Jews from Spain. Some of these Jews had gone to Portugal and later came to Brazil – after the discovery –, forcibly converted to Christianity by the Inquisition as New Christians.
2. To institute a museum that tells the story of the Jews persecuted by the Inquisition who arrived in Brazil, and the New Christians who maintained Jewish practices for generations until March 31, 1821, when the Inquisition ended in Portugal.
3. To create the possibility of bringing a Jewish school project to Niterói through partnerships between cities in Brazil and Israel.
4. To give lectures and workshops about political developments in Israel and their influence on
countries worldwide.
